HEARTHSTONE HISTORIC HOUSE MUSEUM, 625 W. PROSPECT AVENUE

Hearthstone Historic House Museum is a nationally renown historic site - the first private residence to be powered by hydro-electricity. The original house was electrified using the country's first hydroelectric central power station employing the Edison system, and still contains original Edison "electroliers," light switches, and some of the world's only examples of original Edison wiring. The house and museum features hands-on exhibits renewable resources and, of course, electricity.

Queen Anne Style Victorian Architecture

The beautiful Queen Anne Victorian architecture, with breathtaking interiors,is a must-see Appleton attraction. Exhibiting a remarkable level of artistry in both its exterior and interior, this house is an exceptional representation of the Queen Anne style. Designed by William Waters, a nationally known 19th century architect, Hearthstone presents a strong physical impression as it interprets the elements that characterize the Queen Anne style of architecture. Enjoy the local history of Wisconsin, the Gilded Age, and fortunes won and lost.

PAPER DISCOVERY CENTER, 425 W. WATER STREET

museum

The Paper Discovery Center is a museum and workshop center focused on papermaking, since paper is an important local industry. Programs in the past have included hands-on work experience, tours, and general information on papermaking. The Paper International Hall of Fame, at the Center, was founded in 1992 by a small group of paper industry leaders. They felt strongly that those who had done so much to develop the industry should be recognized for their impact in the health, education and general well-being of people all over the world.

Paper is an important part of the manufacturing contribution to the economy and the Hall of Fame is instrumental in preserving that history.

The Paper Discovery Center opened in March 2005 as a science and technology education museum. The museum fosters the understanding of paper and related industries, its heritage, impact on quality of life, and challenges and opportunities. This restored building, formerly the Atlas Paper Company, has been called a jewel. Come discover this jewel on the banks of the historic Fox River for yourself!

THE TROUT MUSEUM OF ART, 111 W. COLLEGE AVENUE

The Trout Museum of Art is an important component of the Fox Cities Building for the Arts. The Trout Museum of Art’s mission is to excite the Fox Cities about the visual arts. The activities which allow the art museum to fulfill its mission include: exhibitions, educational programming and special events such as the annual Art at the Park

artist exhibitor festival, lectures, workshops, and family fun days.

The Appleton Artists Guild set out in 1960 to provide educational opportunities for local artists, create a suitable viewing gallery, and amass a permanent collection starting. The very first activities pursued by the guild were sharing and critiquing artwork and technique. The Appleton Gallery of Art moved from their first gallery on Morrison Street in 1972, to their current location on College Avenue and became the Appleton Art Center in 2002. The generosity of Dr. Monroe E. and Sandra Trout fulfilled a long time hope to have a permanent collection of visual art when they gifted their collection to the Appleton Art Center in 2010, along with a $1 million endowment to preserve, protect and promote the collection.
